MyDefrag v4.2.7 Free Disk Defragmenter

leave a comment »

MyDefrag is a disk defragmenter and optimizer (a maintenance utility to make your hard disk faster) for Windows 2000, 2003, XP, Vista, 2008, Win7, and for X64. It is freeware, no time limit, fully functional, no advertisements. Fast, low overhead, with many optimization strategies, can handle floppies, USB disks, memory sticks, and anything else that looks like a disk to Windows. Included are a set of easy to use scripts for end users, a scripting engine for demanding users, a screensaver, and a combined Windows plus command line version that can be scheduled by the Windows task scheduler or for use from administrator scripts.

MyDefrag is extremely solid because it is based on the standard defragmentation API by Microsoft, a system library that is included in Windows 2000, 2003, XP, Vista, 2008, and Win7. Most defragmenters are based on this API, including the free defragmenter that comes with Windows and many commercial defragmenters. Basically all MyDefrag does is send “move this file to that location” commands to the API. The API is part of the operating system and can safely move almost any file on the disk, without risk and while the computer is in full use.

Defragmentation and optimization will not only make a harddisk faster, but also lengthen it’s life span, because the disk will have less work to do and therefore have less wear and tear. Also, it will refresh and strengthen the magnetic data on the harddisk by simply reading the (weakened) data and writing it afresh. However, defragmenting and optimizing is work, so excessive defragmenting and optimizing can actually cause more wear and tear than it prevents.

VirtualDub v1.9.2 Experimental Version x86/x64

virtualdub-1.9.2-exp

VirtualDub is a free video capture/processing utility for 32-bit and 64-bit Windows platforms (95/98/ME/NT4/2000/XP), licensed under the GNU General Public License (GPL). It lacks the editing power of a general-purpose editor such as Adobe Premiere, but is streamlined for fast linear operations over video. It has batch-processing capabilities for processing large numbers of files and can be extended with third-party video filters. VirtualDub is mainly geared toward processing AVI files, although it can read (not write) MPEG-1 and also handle sets of BMP images. The tool is absolutely free and very easy to use at least to do some basic video editing of your clips or to make a short timelapse video from a bunch of images. You can also greatly enhance the basic functionality with the help of additional video filters allowing you to do much more with your videos…

ffdshow-config1

FFDshow is a DirectShow decoding filter for decompressing DivX, XviD, H.264, FLV, WMV, MPEG-1 and MPEG-2, MPEG-4 movies. It uses libavcodec from ffmpeg project for video decompression, postprocessing code from mplayer to enhance visual quality of low bitrate movies, and is based on original DirectShow filter from XviD, which is GPL’ed educational implementation of MPEG4 encoder. FFDshow can be configured to display subtitles, to enable or disable various built-in codecs, to grab screenshots, to enable keyboard control, and to enhance movies with increased resolution, sharpness, and many other post-processing filters. It has the ability to manipulate audio with effects like an equalizer, a Dolby decoder, reverb, Winamp DSP plugins, and more. Some of the postprocessing is borrowed from the MPlayer project and AviSynth filters.

XviD Video Codec 1.2.2 – x86/x64

xvid-121-codec

Xvid is an open-source research project focusing on video compression and is a collaborative development effort. All code is released under the terms of the GNU GPL license. The Xvid video codec implements MPEG-4 Simple Profile and Advanced Simple Profile standards. It permits compressing and decompressing digital video in order to reduce the required bandwidth of video data for transmission over computer networks or efficient storage on CDs or DVDs. Due to its unrivalled quality Xvid has gained great popularity and is used in many other GPLed applications, like e.g. Transcode, MEncoder, MPlayer, Xine and many more.

The most outstanding feature of Xvid is the excellent picture quality it provides even at high compression ratios. A major emphasis of the project is put on research to achieve highest possible picture quality and novel algorithms have been developed that enable outstanding detail-richness and image fidelity. The Xvid codec is especially optimized towards offline, multi-pass compression for storage and archival purposes and has been found to deliver superior quality over any other MPEG-4 part 2 based codec by independent third parties.

Media Player Classic HomeCinema x86/x64 1.2.1156

mpc-hc-1-2-1156

The Media Player Classic Home Cinema is an audio and video player with a lot of additional features. The project is based on the original “Media Player Classic” and was created after Gabest, the original author, stopped working on it. Several new features have been integrated in this player, such as:

– An option to remove Tearing
– Translations available in several different languages
– Additional video decoders and in particular H.264 and VC-1 with DXVA support
– Better support for Windows Vista, including a separate release for 64 bits platform
– Support for Vista’s new EVR renderer
– A lot of bug and vulnerability fixes

Modern graphics card offer the possibility to decode partially or completely a video stream using DirectX Video Acceleration (DXVA), in order to reduce CPU usage dramatically. MPC-HC includes an embedded video decoder that uses this technology, to decode H.264 and VC-1 with hardly any CPU time required. Unfortunately the MPC-HC decoder only supports the “bitstream mode” at this stage, which means that only the most recent graphic cards are supported: nVidia series 8(9)xxx for H.264 only and ATI Radeon HD series for H.264 and VC-1 decoding. The latest version includes fixes for some DXVA issues in previous builds…
