MediaCoder is a free universal batch media transcoder, which nicely integrates most popular audio/video codecs and tools into an all-in-one solution. With a flexible and extendable architecture, new codecs and tools are added in constantly as well as supports for new devices. MediaCoder intends to be the swiss army knife for media transcoding in all time. Millions of people are using the software all over the world. The latest version of MediaCoder also supports GPU acceleration if you have an Nvidia-based CUDA capable videocard in your system. The Media Player Classic Home Cinema is an audio and video player with a lot of additional features. The project is based on the original “Media Player Classic” and was created after Gabest, the original author, stopped working on it. Several new features have been integrated in this player, such as:

– An option to remove Tearing
– Translations available in several different languages
– Additional video decoders and in particular H.264 and VC-1 with DXVA support
– Better support for Windows Vista, including a separate release for 64 bits platform
– Support for Vista’s new EVR renderer
– A lot of bug and vulnerability fixes

Modern graphics card offer the possibility to decode partially or completely a video stream using DirectX Video Acceleration (DXVA), in order to reduce CPU usage dramatically. MPC-HC includes an embedded video decoder that uses this technology, to decode H.264 and VC-1 with hardly any CPU time required. Unfortunately the MPC-HC decoder only supports the “bitstream mode” at this stage, which means that only the most recent graphic cards are supported:

HandBrake 0.9.3 Video Converter

HandBrake is an open-source, GPL-licensed, multiplatform, multithreaded video transcoder, available for MacOS X, Linux and Windows. With HandBrake you can convert any DVD-like source: VIDEO_TS folder, DVD image or real DVD (unencrypted – protection methods including CSS are not supported internally and must be handled externally with third-party software and libraries), and some .VOB and .TS files. And of course almost any multimedia file it can get libavformat to read and libavcodec to decode can also be converted.
