Dolphin SVN Revision 3402 – Gamecube and Wii Emulator

leave a comment »

dolphin-gamecube-wii-emulator-zelda

Dolphin started as a Nintendo Gamecube emulator, but now it also has support for Nintendo Wii and basic Triforce emulation (this is pending a commit, and does not run games yet). Gamecube compatibility is quite good – many games work, but games still don’t work. The main Nintendo games like Zelda, Mario Sunshine and Pikmin and some others might have problems without sound. Nintendo Wii compatibility is not as good as the Gamecube compatibility, but several games are fully playable, and lots of games are showing intros and running almost ok. Dolphin can currently only run “images”, also known as ISO or GCM files, of Gamecube and Wii games, since a PC DVD drive cannot read the discs directly.

PCSX2 Beta Revision 1329 – Playstation 2 Emulator

pcsx2-god-of-war

PCSX2 is a PlayStation 2 emulator for Windows and Linux, started by the same team that brought you PCSX (a Sony PlayStation 1 emulator). The PCSX2 project attempts to allow PS2 code to be executed on your computer, thus meaning you can put a PS2 DVD or CD into your computers drive, and boot it up. The project has been running for a little over four years now, and since it’s initial release has grown tremendously in terms of game compatibility. From initially just being able to run a few public domain demos, it’s current state enables many games to boot and actually go in game, such as the popular Final Fantasy X or Devil May Cry 3.

PS2 Emulation is a complex task, far worse than emulating a console from the previous generation (PlayStation1, N64, Saturn), simply due to the CPU power required to get ‘playable’ speeds from a PS2 game under emulation. Whilst speed can be improved via various “recompilers” (eeREC and vuREC, Emotion Engine recompiler and Vector Unit CPU recompiler respectively), you will still need the latest and most powerfull machine you can get your hands on to even break the 30 FPS mark.

Snes9x 1.51 – Super Nintendo Emulator

snes9x-emulator-punchout

Snes9x is a portable, freeware Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) emulator. It basically allows you to play most games designed for the SNES and Super Famicom Nintendo game systems on your PC or Workstation; which includes some real gems that were only ever released in Japan.

Snes9x is the result of well over three years worth of part-time hacking, coding, recoding, debugging, divorce, etc. (just kidding about the divorce bit). Snes9x is coded in C++, with three assembler CPU emulation cores on the i386 Linux and Windows ports.

ZSNES 1.51 – Super Nintendo Emulator

zsnes-emulator

ZSNES is a Super Nintendo (SNES) emulator programmed by zsKnight and _Demo_. On April 2, 2001 the ZSNES project was GPL’ed and its source released to the public. This is simply the best Super Nintendo available. It’s ultra fast and should run at full speed on any Celeron or faster PC. It also supports Super Nintendo features which are very hard to emulate (and which were unavailable just a while ago), like DSP1 emulation (Mario Kart), SuperFX emulation (StarFox) and now even C4 emulation (Megaman X3)! These features make ZSNES the most compatible Super Nintendo emulator available. The sound is also great as ZSNES allows some special tricks like sound interpolation and a low pass filter. You can get 44khz Stereo sound with ZSNES. The Windows version of ZSNES requires at least version 8.0 or higher of Microsoft DirectX!

JPCSP v0.2 Revision 1064 PSP Emulator

jpcsp-harvest-moon

JPCSP is the first PSP emulator that is written in JAVA. Most people think java is too slow. But Shadow and his team has proven us wrong. The newest Java versions are almost as fast as C which makes it very interesting for emu dev’s. Shadow and his team are working day and night with pleasure on the emu, many coders have dedicated to the project. Because it’s written in java many young developers find it interesting to learn how the emulator works. There are already quite a few PSP games that are playable and with every new revision the emulator gets better and better…
