Dolphin SVN Revision 3402 – Gamecube and Wii Emulator

dolphin-gamecube-wii-emulator-zelda

Dolphin started as a Nintendo Gamecube emulator, but now it also has support for Nintendo Wii and basic Triforce emulation (this is pending a commit, and does not run games yet). Gamecube compatibility is quite good – many games work, but games still don’t work. The main Nintendo games like Zelda, Mario Sunshine and Pikmin and some others might have problems without sound. Nintendo Wii compatibility is not as good as the Gamecube compatibility, but several games are fully playable, and lots of games are showing intros and running almost ok. Dolphin can currently only run “images”, also known as ISO or GCM files, of Gamecube and Wii games, since a PC DVD drive cannot read the discs directly.

PCSX2 Beta Revision 1329 – Playstation 2 Emulator

with 5 comments

pcsx2-god-of-war

PCSX2 is a PlayStation 2 emulator for Windows and Linux, started by the same team that brought you PCSX (a Sony PlayStation 1 emulator). The PCSX2 project attempts to allow PS2 code to be executed on your computer, thus meaning you can put a PS2 DVD or CD into your computers drive, and boot it up. The project has been running for a little over four years now, and since it’s initial release has grown tremendously in terms of game compatibility. From initially just being able to run a few public domain demos, it’s current state enables many games to boot and actually go in game, such as the popular Final Fantasy X or Devil May Cry 3.

PS2 Emulation is a complex task, far worse than emulating a console from the previous generation (PlayStation1, N64, Saturn), simply due to the CPU power required to get ‘playable’ speeds from a PS2 game under emulation. Whilst speed can be improved via various “recompilers” (eeREC and vuREC, Emotion Engine recompiler and Vector Unit CPU recompiler respectively), you will still need the latest and most powerfull machine you can get your hands on to even break the 30 FPS mark.

Snes9x 1.51 – Super Nintendo Emulator

snes9x-emulator-punchout

Snes9x is a portable, freeware Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) emulator. It basically allows you to play most games designed for the SNES and Super Famicom Nintendo game systems on your PC or Workstation; which includes some real gems that were only ever released in Japan.

Snes9x is the result of well over three years worth of part-time hacking, coding, recoding, debugging, divorce, etc. (just kidding about the divorce bit). Snes9x is coded in C++, with three assembler CPU emulation cores on the i386 Linux and Windows ports.

ZSNES 1.51 – Super Nintendo Emulator

zsnes-emulator

ZSNES is a Super Nintendo (SNES) emulator programmed by zsKnight and _Demo_. On April 2, 2001 the ZSNES project was GPL’ed and its source released to the public. This is simply the best Super Nintendo available. It’s ultra fast and should run at full speed on any Celeron or faster PC. It also supports Super Nintendo features which are very hard to emulate (and which were unavailable just a while ago), like DSP1 emulation (Mario Kart), SuperFX emulation (StarFox) and now even C4 emulation (Megaman X3)! These features make ZSNES the most compatible Super Nintendo emulator available. The sound is also great as ZSNES allows some special tricks like sound interpolation and a low pass filter. You can get 44khz Stereo sound with ZSNES. The Windows version of ZSNES requires at least version 8.0 or higher of Microsoft DirectX!

MAME 0.131 – Multiple Arcade Machine Emulator

with 2 comments

mame-emulator-game

MAME stands for Multiple Arcade Machine Emulator. When used in conjunction with images of the original arcade game’s ROM and disk data, MAME attempts to reproduce that game as faithfully as possible on a more modern general-purpose computer. MAME can currently emulate several thousand different classic arcade video games from the late 1970s through the modern era.

As of version 0.131 the MAME emulator supports 4162 unique games and 8030 actual ROM image sets and is growing all the time. However, not all of the games in MAME are currently playable; 1116 ROM sets are marked as not working in the current version, and 44 are not actual games but BIOS ROM sets.

MAME is free. Its source code is also free. MAME is strictly a non-profit project, but ROM, CD, and hard disk images are all copyrighted material. They cannot be distributed without the explicit permission of the copyright owner. They are not “abandonware”, nor have any of the games supported by MAME passed out of copyright. The main purpose of MAME is to be a reference to the inner workings of the emulated arcade machines. This is done both for educational purposes and for preservation purposes, in order to prevent many historical games from disappearing forever once the hardware they run on stops working. Of course, in order to preserve the games and demonstrate that the emulated behavior matches the original, you must also be able to actually play the games. This is considered a nice side effect, and is not MAME’s primary focus.

RBC9 – SpaceNav for 3DConnexion SpaceNavigator / SpacePilot

with 4 comments

rbc9-spacenav

Why a Driver and not a simple User-Mode application? Or using the 3DConnexion SDK? Some application or game don’t accept hooking keyboard, or use DirectX Input, so with a user-mode app, I’m not able to send information. With a driver, SpaceNavigator doesn’t “emulate” a keyboard/mouse/joystick, but IS a keyboard, IS a mouse and IS a Joystick. RBC9 – SpaceNav is an alternative driver and software allowing you to use your 3DConnexion SpaceNavigator / SpacePilot in absolutely every application, even when the official drivers and software don’t offer the needed support. RBC9 – SpaceNav gives you the power to utilize your 3Dconnexion hardware 3d mouse in everyday applications such as web browser, word processor etc. by just creating a profile for that application where you define each action of the controller and what function will it perform. With RBC9 – SpaceNav you can emulate mouse, joystick and keyboard commands so you can even control your games with your favorite 3d controller…
